Part of a bond issue that created 28 district-wide school improvement projects, The Norman High School renovation set out to achieve the following design goals, “upgrade learning environments, enhance safety and provide additional instructional opportunities for students”. Norman High School was built in 1951 with seven major additions completed between 1956 and 2011. MA+ Architecture’s work for this project met all bond issue criteria while addressing repair issues, improved circulation and building-wide design cohesiveness.
Being the City of Norman’s original high school, the community takes pride in the NHS building and culture. The MA+ design team met with administrators and developed a program to address the school’s current challenges and specific needs. This collaboration created unique opportunities for tradition to influence design. Tradition is reflected in the design of the breakout and collaboration areas defining shared spaces throughout the school. The exterior remodel respects the shared love and familiarity for the school by the community.
The campus upgrades include secure entries, a College and Career Academy, Freshman Academy, new Learning Commons, STEM classrooms, IT Technology center and a Fabrication Lab. Now at the front of the building, the relocation of Administration offices helps improve security while ensuring community connectivity.
