KG+D Architects partnered with the Rippowam Cisqua School to transform their Upper Campus into a next generation educational facility that effectively supports the independent middle school's immersive educational programming while remaining in keeping with the community's "Bedford Barn" architectural tradition.
The project addressed this challenge by creating a front elevation that is reflective of the community's 350-year barn aesthetic, while the interior expression is open, modern and forward-thinking. The project includes a new main entry, media center, dining hall, classroom wing and an innovation lab that opens to a courtyard amphitheater.
Some of the next generation learning spaces include a flexible media center with a dramatic 18-foot cathedral ceiling and a light-filled Innovation Center that opens directly to an outdoor amphitheater through folding glass doors. A new classroom wing featuring flexible furniture overlooks the interior amphitheater. Sustainable design elements include a green roof, photovoltaics and large window walls and clerestory windows that allow for the use of natural light and energy efficient lighting controls.
The Rippowam Cisqua School is known for its unique balance of tradition and innovation. The renovated Upper Campus is reflective of this balance, blending the architectural aesthetic of the local community with modern design and technology.
